WHAT IS PTSD?
Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Such events may include natural disasters, accidents, physical or sexual assault, combat, or other forms of violence.
Common symptoms
Intrusive thoughts: Individuals may experience recurrent, distressing memories of the traumatic event, flashbacks, nightmares, or intense emotional or physical reactions when reminded of the trauma.
Avoidance: People with PTSD may avoid situations, places, people, or activities that remind them of the traumatic event. They may also avoid talking or thinking about the event, leading to emotional numbing and social withdrawal.
Negative changes in thinking and mood: PTSD can lead to negative changes in beliefs or expectations about oneself or the world, feelings of detachment from others, persistent negative emotions such as guilt, shame, or fear, and a diminished interest in activities once enjoyed.
Hyperarousal: Individuals with PTSD may experience heightened arousal, including difficulty sleeping, irritability, anger outbursts, hypervigilance, exaggerated startle response, and difficulty concentrating.
